Betsy DeVos Moves to End Obama’s Guidelines for Campus Sexual Assault Investigations

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said Thursday that her department will change the Obama Administration’s guidance for handling cases of sexual assault on college campuses and rethink the way Title IX regulations against gender discrimination are enforced.

“The sad reality is that lady justice is not blind on campuses today. This unraveling of justice is shameful, it’s wholly un-American,” DeVos said during a speech at George Mason University in Virginia . “There must be a better way forward. Every survivor of sexual misconduct must be taken seriously. Every student accused of sexual misconduct must know that guilt is not predetermined.”

DeVos’ speech came almost two months after she met with various advocate groups to discuss how sexual assault investigations are handled on college campuses, listening to victims of sexual assault as well as to men who say they have been falsely accused. Victims’ advocates have urged DeVos not to roll backthe Obama Administration’s controversial Dear Colleague letter. That letter established strict guidelines for universities to follow when investigating sexual assault complaints or risk losing federal funding under Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education.

On Thursday, DeVos criticized that guidance for creating a system that “has failed too many students.”

“Instead of working with schools on behalf of students, the prior administration weaponized the Office of Civil Rights to work against schools and against students,” she said. “The era of rule by letter is over. Through intimidation and coercion, the failed system has clearly pushed schools to overreach.”

Protesters outside the speech chanted “stop supporting rapists,” and advocates of sexual assault victims quickly criticized the announcement. “What seems procedural is a blunt attack on survivors of sexual assault,” Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, said in a statement. ” It will discourage schools from taking steps to comply with the law—just at the moment when they are finally working to get it right.”

DeVos said the department will launch a so-called notice and comment process to develop a new approach.

“We know this much to be true: one rape is one too many, one assault is one too many,” DeVos said. “One person denied due process is one too many. This conversation may be uncomfortable, but we must have it. It is our moral obligation to get this right. Campus sexual misconduct must continue to be confronted head-on.”

Not Broken, Just Dented!

When we hear bad news we can become broken.  The news is shattering and in effect we break.  Not physically at first but soul destroying sure gets us feeling as such.  So we can’t just mend ourselves with pretend physical glue.  We can however reach for something stronger.  That’s the spiritual super glue.  It bonds solid and becomes unbreakable.  We don’t have to search for it when we have no energy, it’s always within our grasp.  We just need to accept that we aren’t worth breaking anymore and allow ourselves to remember to have full trust in our own abilities and also to never mind anyone elses weaknesses of which they like to pin on us either before we break, during or after, often all three.  I’m sure we are capable of knowing who we are far better than anyone else.

Liberals Upset Singer Taylor Swift Hasn’t Attacked President Donald Trump

Does it really matter who TS votes for? National   Christine Rousselle   Sep 5, 2017   |   10:55AM    Washington, DC

Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past week, you’re likely aware that Taylor Swift emerged from her yearlong silence and released a new song and announced an album, titled “Reputation,” to be released this November. While this author is personally a fan of “Look What You Made Me Do,” and looks forward to buying the album come November, some people took an odd take on the album announcement: they demanded that the politically-inactive singer speak out and condemn President Donald Trump.

In a post that reads kind of hilariously following the record-breaking success of both the single and the accompanying music video, Katie Cunningham of Junkee says that for Swift to get her career back to what it was, she must “renounce Donald Trump.”

So bad was the backlash to being exposed as a fraud that Swift spent the year more or less in hiding — her posts on social media were mostly limited to birthday wishes for her famous friends, she stopped attending high-profile events, she didn’t hold her annual Fourth of July party. Depending on how cooked you like your conspiracy theories, she even started leaving her New York apartment inside a box to avoid paparazzi. Her house of cards collapsed.

But Taylor Swift’s biggest problem isn’t Kim Kardashian or Kanye West. It’s not even Katy Perry. If Taylor Swift wants her career back, there’s one thing she has to do: renounce Donald Trump.

(Spoiler alert: her career appears to be fine.)

Amy Zimmerman from the Daily Beast had similar thoughts, and said that in order for people to “trust” Swift once again, she must denounce the president, even if it means “pissing off some of her fans.”

Swift can complain about her mangled reputation all she wants, but the facts speak for themselves. The pop singer, while inarguably talented, often comes across as highly secretive at best and deceitful at worst. If Taylor Swift actually wants us to trust her, she could start by publicly announcing that she didn’t vote for Donald Trump—even if that means pissing off some of her fans. Until Swift is ready to let go of her perfectly controlled (albeit compromised) reputation, the pop star’s vision of glowing headlines and a fresh new start will stay a fantasy.

As Trump Kills DACA, Bannon’s Breitbart Celebrates A Major Policy Win

WASHINGTON ― Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is still notching policy wins after his return to the right-wing website Breitbart. President Donald Trump’s decision to end Obama-era protections for undocumented immigrants brought as children to the U.S. by their parents is a major victory for Bannon and Breitbart — and they know it.

As Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced plans Tuesday to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program with a six-month delay on enforcement, Breitbart’s chief White House correspondent celebrated:

“This is a huge step in the right direction for the Trump administration, and for Breitbart as we cover the stories that most of the rest of the media ignore on immigration like crimes committed by illegal aliens including so-called Dreamers, the economic and cultural effects on American workers of large scale legal and illegal immigration, and the forgotten man and woman President Trump honed in on during the 2016 race and in his inauguration speech,” a senior Breitbart editor who was not authorized to speak on the record told HuffPost.

Breitbart was a primary source of the push to repeal DACA, which covers approximately 800,000 people. The site has sometimes published multiple stories per day promoting repeal and praising DACA opponents, while attacking Democrats and Republicans who support the program. At one point on Tuesday, nine of the site’s 10 most popular stories were about Trump’s DACA repeal (or, in one case, about Hillary Clinton’s DACA support). It’s no surprise that Breitbart sees a victory here: The site has served for years as the most prominent platform for anti-immigration organizations and politicians to promote their views.

Breitbart’s celebration also shows that the right-wing populist movement Bannon represents is still influential in the administration, even after Bannon’s departure. Strong supporters of these policies remain in power: Sessions, who Bannon convinced to endorse Trump in 2016, remains in charge of the Justice Department. Stephen Miller, a former Sessions aide, is the president’s top domestic policy adviser. And former Breitbart writer Julia Hahn remains in the White House working on policy with Miller. Bannon can now provide them support from his perch at Breitbart.

Trump’s decision on DACA could result in a congressional push to pass legislation reinstating the program. But Breitbart is already planning to work to defeat any such legislative action, should it arise.

“Over the next six months as Congress considers whether to legislatively grant amnesty to the 800,000 plus illegal aliens that Obama illegally granted DACA executive amnesty to, we will be vigilant in how we cover and expose any career politicians who run counter to the will of the American voting public and the citizens of this country who very clearly stated in November 2016 that amnesty in any form is not acceptable public policy,” the senior Breitbart editor told HuffPost.

How will Trump’s administration impact you?

In 2013, Bannon, Sessions and Miller, then a staffer for Sessions, successfully joined forces to beat a bipartisan immigration reform bill. Bannon and Miller teamed up again in 2014 to orchestrate the shock defeat of then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.). Cantor’s support for immigration reform, and the backing he received from Wall Street donors who supported the policy, were the main issues that brought him down.

Breitbart now backs former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore in the special Republican Senate primary runoff election against Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.), who was appointed to fill the seat Sessions left when he became attorney general. This position puts the site at odds with Bannon’s former boss, Trump, who endorsed the incumbent Strange in early August. Just as it did in Cantor’s race, the website has dispatched reporter Matt Boyle to cover the final weeks of the contest. One such dispatch favorably compares Moore to Sessions, noting that their respective positions on immigration and trade are no different.

The Moore-Strange primary fight is only a piece of the larger battle Breitbart is waging. The big fight is to oust Ryan from his position as House speaker and replace him with a congressman more favorable to the Breitbart agenda. Axios reported on Tuesday that Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), who heads the conservative House Freedom Caucus, met with Bannon and Boyle at Breitbart’s offices in Washington on Monday to discuss the caucus’ plans to take control of House leadership.

Meadows appeared the next day as a guest on Breitbart’s radio show, hosted by Boyle, to tell listeners how they should pressure Ryan, House Republican leadership and their own representatives. Meadows laid out the big fights to come on the debt ceiling and the budget, and urged Breitbart followers to press their lawmakers to oppose linking a debt ceiling increase to Hurricane Harvey relief funds. He called on listeners to tell lawmakers only to pass a government funding bill that would defund sanctuary cities and Planned Parenthood and include money for Trump’s border wall, and to put a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare on the president’s desk.

“If they do that, we will hopefully avoid this bloody September,” Meadows concluded.
